UEFA Champions League Final Special - Wembley Stadium

It was only last night so everybody knows that Bayern were crowned 2013 champions at Wembley Stadium. But 50 years from now, could anyone looking at a clip of Arjen Robben's winner be sure of the venue?


Is there anything in the colour HD to 100% identify Wembley?

50 years ago, in the 1963 final, Milan beat Benfica.



The footage is grainy black and white but half a century later, all it takes is one sighting of the goal nets and YOU KNOW it's Wembley.

UEFA Champions League - RSC Anderlecht

When Anderlecht played in only their second European Cup tournament, they hosted their quarter final opponents with stanchions that looked like Wembley's:



By the time Anderlecht were perennial Cup Winners Cup finalists in the late-70's, the stanchions had undergone a Feyenoord-like reshaping:




Remarkably the Purple and Whites shrugged off the box-net fashion through the 1980's and kept their distinctive curvy stanchions till the 1987-88 season.

The 1980 finals featured 8 teams in two groups of 4. The number of host stadia also increased, from two to four. There, the goal nets generally hung from curvy A-frames in a hybrid fashion:

Reviewing the Champions League R16, Wayne Rooney's second header against Milan at San Siro struck a chord.



It brought to mind Kevin Keegan's header against Denmark in 1978.



To any Spot the Difference afficiando these goals will look very different.

But to this mind's eye, the way the ball hits the net makes both these goals the same.
